Park Hopping

We went to Manito last weekend and ventured into the Duncan Gardens, but I just didn't have my fill and since we've been blessed with another beautiful weekend, we went again yesterday. I think it's one of Spokane's true gems and I would build a house right smack in the middle of it if I could. We made it to the Japanese Garden this time too, and the kids had a blast dipping their toes in the water, hiking through the trails and burning off some extra energy. I was going to try and get some shots of the flowers up close but the batteries died in my camera. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the day that I was able to squeeze in while it still had some juice.

Mama's Boys

1st place........ Runner-up
Much to my dismay, I don't know if my little Mitchy is going to be an official, hard-core Mama's Boy. He seems to love Daddy a whole lot too, so I'm doing my best to convince him to jump on the band wagon with his other brothers. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Beautiful

"We're out walking: my little boy holding my left hand, his older sister on my right, and the baby, six weeks old, asleep in her Snugli. We're still at the stage when my taking a shower seems like an accomplishment. I haven't lost all the weight I gained while pregnant; it's been months since I had my hair highlighted to preserve the conceit that I remainn as blond as I was at 16; I look like I'm getting as little sleep as I am; and I am wearing a nursing bra - a contraption that, inexplicably, department stores categorize as lingerie. In short: not a glamorous moment. Still, I feel - for the first time in my life - really, truly, I-don't-need-anyone-to-tell-me-so, drop-dead beautiful. It has taken three children to deliver me to this state, this symetry of boy on my left, girl on my right, and baby on my breast."

This is a snipit of an article I read that made me cry (big surprise) - it's like she took the words out of my mouth, or maybe out of my heart. Just add an extra baby and this pretty much sums up the beauty that is motherhood in my world.

Moms of twins are twice as hot

Well, at least in my sister's case:-)
Even though Stephy and I are less than 2 years apart, we are completely different - or so I thought. But I was just thinking....we married brothers, our anniversaries are 2 days apart, we both went to nursing school, our firstborns share the same birth date, and we both have twins!

Date night wasn't half bad

We've had a gift certificate for a steakhouse in town that has been burning a hole in our pocket for months. We should've gone out and used it while I was still pregnant since it would've been easier logistically to go out when 2 of our kids were still "contained" so to speak, but we didn't. We've been dying to get out of the house and enjoy a quiet meal together, you know the kind without potty talk, or spilled beverages followed by the usual floor mopping session that wraps up the meals at home. Lately I've been finding myself glazed over, staring into space, daydreaming about going out for a delicious dinner - a quiet table overlooking a fabulous view, the only sounds are of tinkling stemware and the distant chatter of other diners, adult diners, who are no doubt sipping fine wine, eating clams on the half shell, and talking politics. Not the kind of restaurant with a drive-thru, or with waitresses singing "happy birthday" in every bizarre form imagineable. No siree, a real restaurant is what I've been dreaming of. But every time my mind would wander to this magical place, I would be thrust back into reality by the sensation of spit-up running down my shirt, or the shrieks emitted by Dawson and Ella as they break out into all out war over some ridiculous toy. So we were finally able to sneak out for a mere 2 hours 15 minutes, including drive time, for a well deserved date night. There was only one small problem....... Okay, 2 small problems....
But hey, at least we only had 2 of the 4 joining us on our romantic evening, and that isn't half bad.

I am going to be completely honest and admit that my quiet time has been almost non-existent since the babies were born. I read the Bible to the kids, we go to church as often as humanly possible, we pray - but I haven't really taken the time to do that stuff on my own. I guess you could say I'm just too busy, but that's kind of like saying I'm too busy to eat, to sleep, to breathe. The truth is I haven't made time. Because of that everything else starts to suffer, I am not taking care of the most important thing, my relationship with God. The thing is that when I feel like He is far way, when I feel like He is distant, I'm the one that moved. He is always there, steadfast. The Bible says that God wants to hide us in the shadow of His wings, that He wants to gather us like a mother hen gathers her chicks. He is waiting there, waiting to scoop us up into His arms and hold us to His chest. When the waves of this life come crashing down, He is the only One that gives us true rest, solice, peace. What's amazing is that when I choose to make Him less of a priority, His goodness is what draws me in. He knows the mistakes I've made and the ones I've yet to make, and He died for me anyway. I was reading a Focus on the Family newsletter and one of the articles made me cry. The author was talking about the same thing; God's unending love for us, His desire to be close to us. The short version: God pursues us, he woos our hearts with His indescribable grace.
My life is good, I have more kids than I can shake a stick at, I have a loving husband, a beautiful home, great family and friends, even our trusty Lab who is laying in the sun on the patio as I write this reminds me what a good life I have. But even when my life isn't good, He is good. In the words of one of my favorite songs, His love is extravagant, His friendship is intimate. Spread wide in the arms of Christ is a love that covers sin. No greater love have I ever known, He captured my heart again....

T3

I just adore this little guy, he totally melts my heart. I love all of my kids equally, but there is something about each of them that makes me tick for different reasons. My little Mitchy is a sweetheart, and we need some sweetness around here to balance the dark forces of evil that usually predominate. I put a short video below of Ella playing doctor with him (with Mom's supervision of course). I think it shows his sweet disposition, he'll let you do just about anything to him as long as you give him some attention. I love you my little man cub.

That's Just Peachy

We love going up to the Bluff to pick whatever deliciousness is in season, and I usually take the kids up for a little bit of everything all through the summer and fall. But I was toting around a watermelon of my own for the first half of the summer, and new-newborns and trips to the farm aren't super compatable, so that made much of the second half out of the question too. But we finally made it up at the end of August for peaches, yum! Only made one pie and didn't do any canning, oh well, there's always next year. Still good for snacking, and we definitely had our fill of those fuzzy fruits. Next is apples, then pumpkins....can't wait, truly one of my favorite things to do with our little fam. And the baby boys did pretty good for being just 8 weeks old, so it should only get better from here on out. I don't think that quiet little orchard had ever seen so much chaos - maybe we should switch up farms every time we go....

Say What?

I've often thought about adding a "Todd-isms" section to my blog, but frankly most of the funny things Todd says are inappropriate. But here are a couple of recent ones that are G-rated, enjoy.
I was pumping milk for the babies since we were heading out to a place that would make it difficult to nurse, and Todd said in honest amazement "Isn't it weird that you're bigger than a cow? Cows don't get that big when they have babies." I whipped my head around he said "No, no, you know what I mean, their udders in proportion to their babies are small compared to you."
I tried to act offended but I started cracking up and we've been laughing about it since.

The other night 3 of the 4 kids were crying (and the day before that, and the day before that...) and I teasingly told Todd that we should go out and leave the kids at home by themselves, I said we have an alarm system, what's the worse that could happen? He said "Yah, and if CPS comes to get them we'll at least get to go out on a date once in a while."

The post card Ella's teacher sent her the week before school started 1st day of kindergarten - my beautiful girl

Ella's first-day-of-school treats - gotta have cookies and milk, right?!

Pretty soon it's going to be Dawson with the backpack, I'm going to need pills that day

The "kissing hand." I kissed this a bunch of times then Ella tucked it in the pocket of her dress in case she needed a smooch from Mom

Watermelon math - her first day was at the park for a kindergarten social

Story time with Mrs. P, the morning and afternoon classes together

Ella started kindergarten this week and it wasn't as bad as I thought....it was worse! Okay, I know you think I'm weird. This is a good thing, right? Well it is but it just doesn't feel right. How can she be 5, how can she be in school? When she was a baby Todd and I used to say that when she starts school, it's over. By "over" I mean the baby years are over, the toddler years are over, the care-free days are over, it means they are breaking away from Mom and Dad little by little. Now I know it sounds like I'm over reacting a bit and you may be right, but honestly, things are different from here on out. No more taking off to Disneyland, to Ninny and Papa's, to the beach - not unless it's on a weekend or school break. There's homework at night, volunteer hours for Mom, trips into to town every day. No more staying up late on "school nights." She's going to become increasingly aware of her clothes, her short-comings, her talents and failures. Her feelings will get hurt, and I won't be there to stick up for her. She'll have successes, she'll get in trouble, she'll get tummy aches and scrapes and I won't be there. That's the hard part, letting go, letting her grow up into the person she's created to be. She is fiercely independent but the funny thing is I still need her....
She had a great first day (first official day at the school) and I told myself over and over to keep my composure. I didn't want to upset her so I tried my darndest not to cry, but the tears just came, and came... I love her so much and I know this is right for her. I know she'll blossom there. We prayed for so long about this decision and I know it's right, but it just doesn't feel that way yet, not for me. She's only at school for less than 3 hours, and by the time I make the drive home she's back in a flash, so I'm happy about that. And her teacher is absolutely divine. I love, LoVe, LOVE her. Ella is the only girl in her class, poor thing is destined to be surrounded by boys. But Mrs. P calls her the princess of the class and we all know Ella can hold her own, rowdy boys or not. So here's to closing one chapter and beginning another, I know one thing for sure, the stories I'll be hearing about school may be worth the cost of tuition in and of itself.
