Heck on Wheels

Ella had a big week! On my birthday she learned to ride her bike nix the training wheels, and...she had her 1st sleep-over! Two major milestones on the road to big-girlhood. I was impressed with her taking off on her bike so easily since we were doing it in our back yard over the bumps, and rocks, and turns, and grass... and with rogue babies milling about. She did crash the next day and got some pretty awesome road rash on her forearm. I bandaged her up (and Dawson, he wanted to partake in the gauze and medical tape experience) and off she went again. A few days later she spent the night at cousin Gabe's house and had a bLaSt. She was really worried a couple of nights before and started crying, asking if I could call Aunt Suzanne and cancel the slumber party. I told her it was no problem to just do a play date instead, but she was brave and wound up making it through the night. I packed her little backpack up with all of her comfort items: pillow - check, silky blanket - check, Baby Moose - check. She called at about 9:30 pm to tell me they were watching "Peter Pan" in bed and that she'd found my love note. It was strange not having her here, just preparation for when she breaks my heart this week and goes to school ALL day.

Things that make you go hmmm....

Let's be real, our kids have zero chance of turning out normal. I hope, I pray, but things aren't looking good. Mitchy is about as close as we're gonna get to a regular kid. I think his expression says it all, the other Rufflings are pretty much crazy. What a catch!

Mitchy is bouncing his head up and down so fast he looks like this, even when the camera is on sport mode:)
We were painting Father's Day gifts for Todd, but Mitch thought he'd just paint himself. The gift that keeps on givin'`
No, Ella and Dawson and Charlie don't drink bottles, but the big kids wanted one so what the heck. I mean when's the last time you saw Cinderella, in her wedding veil, drinking a bottle?

This face, which is a common occurance, is what got Charlie the nickname "Monkey."

Barbie? Is that you? Oh my.
The Siberian super-hero wielding a pirate pistol.

These tights were part of an outfit Ella got for Christmas 2 years ago. She has since re-named them her "lucky tights" and wears them A LOT, and over just about anything. Even Dawson loves them and always tells her "Ella, I sure love yer lucky tights!" Here she is doing a spiraling triple sow-cow dismount from the ottoman.

Seems like there's a better way to get down the stairs, but who am I to judge?

No explanation necessary.

Now there's an idea...
Salad spinner? No way. It's a super cool space hat.
Ella's chicken feet

What are you lookin' at?
This was not Mitch's idea.

`
Good morning to you, we live in a zoo, you look like a giraffe, and you smell like one too.

Lay you down, now and rest, may your slumber be blessed...

Charlie finally decided to give sleeping through the night a try! Hallelujah!! Do you remember the first time one of your babies slept through the night and you woke up in a panic thinking "did they cry and I didn't hear them?" "did the monitor stop working?" or if you're completely neurotic like me "did they suffocate in their blanket? Oh, wait, they don't have blankets in their cribs, but still, did they suffocate?!" So this and more raced through my head when I woke up at 6 am, the first full night's sleep since Mother's Day of last year!! He hasn't made a habit of it yet, but still, there's hope!! He's been the worst sleeper yet - Ella slept through the night at 3 months (but stopped napping entirely at 11 monts, so go figure), Mitcy was 2nd, sleeping through the night pretty consistently at 7 months, Dawson was 9 months old when he starting sleeping through the night, but Charlie took the gold by waiting until FOURTEEN MONTHS! What a stinker. And for you skeptics out there, believe me, I tried everything. Plus, we scheduled them all pretty much the same and look at the range: 12 weeks-14 months. I'm tellin' ya, it's those Mama's boys, they will themselves out of a deep sleep just so they can snuggle.
So since we're on the subject of sleep, I included a couple pictures of the babies from last month. I LoVe when they fall asleep in my arms, and don't want to forget their sweet faces as they are in my embrace, drifting off to dreamland.
This is one of Charlie's favorite songs, ironic since it's a lullaby and he is a terrible sleeper, but whatever. It's called Lullaby by Dixie Chicks and it's on my Playlist if you want to listen to it while you read this for full effect:) Just watch out if you're at work, you may need a nap afterwards...

They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I heard your laugh like a serenade
How long do you wanna be loved?
Is forever enough, is forever enough?
I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow they'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you
How long do you wanna be loved?
Is forever enough, is forever enough?
As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
Just close your eyes when your miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade
How long do you wanna be loved?
Is forever enough 'cause I'm never, never givin' you up
Is forever enough 'cause I'm never, never givin' you up

Back from the Outback

Look at how small this guy looks compared to the tires on the truck!

I've been meaning to get to this... Todd said Australia was amazing. Although he didn't get to see much of it in the daylight since he woke up before sunrise and worked until sun down. He didn't make it to the ocean even though his hotel was right on the beach, what a tease to be right there and so close. He did snap a picture of the ocean as they drove by... He was able to see the Sydney Opera House and said it was beautiful. He didn't get many pictures of the trip, apparently he was working or something, but he did say he saw a lot of kangaroo. Apparently they are about as interesting to Aussies as deer are to us - basically a nuisance. The guy that took them around was a Crocodile Dundee type of fellow, Todd said he was exactly like that character. So he had fun hearing all of his stories about the giant bugs, poisonous snakes, shark attacks and just the way of life there in general. He said if we had to move out of the country, we would move there:) He did fall in love with a food item (classic Todd) that he's been talking about, a lot. "Bugs" I guess they call 'em. Mmmm, sounds appetizing huh? I guess they're similar to lobster, I suppose I could get over the name if they taste like lobster and come with a big bowl of melted butter. He flew 18,200 miles since he had 1-2 hour flights almost every day he was there. Poor guy was so sick of planes and airports when he got home. It's a l o n g flight no matter what, but on the way home he ran into just about every glitch you can imagine. Missed one flight because they made the connection too tight, a computer glitch kept all flights on his airline from leaving - for hours. So then he missed the next flight. He was trying so hard to get home at least on the same day as we were expecting him, and he went all over the U.S. once he got to the States trying to get here. He did get to sit directly next to Christian Slater on the way home. I'm sure I would've enjoyed that more than Todd did. But still, he said he was a cool guy and was apparently heading to a friend's house for a jam session. All in all, it took him 44 hours to get home, but he made it. He made it, but his bags didn't. One last glitch on the trip from... He had a little jet lag thanks to the 16 hour time difference, but we fixed him right up. We were so happy to have our world traveler home, safe and sound. Now if we can just get him to stay put.

Spring Chick? I think not.

I love big-girl birthdays, they're so much more fun! It was about 2 pm on my birthday when the kids finally heard that it was my special day. Ella said "no it's not your birthday Mom. You're friends aren't here, there aren't balloons, or a cake..." True, but I get to celebrate my birthday little by little for 2 weeks, so there. Todd and I went to dinner with the kids on my "real" birthday, Friday night Mom came into town and joined me and Steph for dinner, and we got a bit silly with the camera:) Some guy saw us trying to take a picture of ourselves - you know the ones, trying to get the person with the longest arm to get a shot without cutting anyone's face out. So he came up to us and offered to take our picture, which I thought was sweet. We had fun chatting, pigging out, and goofing off. Saturday I got to go out with some of my dearest girls, and next week I'm going to Farm Chicks and Eat, Pray, Love with Steph! Even though I'm only 21, my birthday reminds me how blessed I am to have such amazing family and friends. Thank you for making me feel special! Oh, and this first picture is a perfect example of why I don't drink. This is me after a Coke, yikes.

kaboom

I have a keen sniffer and I am sort of obsessed with making things smell good. Not that many people enjoy stinky things, but you get my drift. I'm the crazy lady in the store that is unscrewing the caps on shampoo bottles, lotion, body wash, laundry soap...If it doesn't pass the sniff test then it's a no-go. One category of products that I've never really given the official sniff test to: cleaning products. I mean come on, how good can the stuff smell? Other than dish soap, I've never tried my smeller out on them before I buy. I've found what works through trial and error and I just throw it in my cart. But one cleaner gets my "smell good seal of approval" - Kaboom. It's this purple foam bathroom cleaner and I love it. It's a little strong while you're actually using it (not in the chemical lung burn way) but it leaves the bathroom smelling fresh as a daisy for an entire day. And who wouldn't want to use a cleaning product that works great, smells good and has the added pizzaz of being an onamatopoeia. Finally the world makes sense again, cleaning stuff is supposed to de-stinkify, so it should smell better than the original stink, right? Oh, and Method brand makes a great natural daily shower spray. It's made with ylang-ylang, not that I have a clue what that is. I just know it smells fresh and good and I'm hoping that weird ingredient is the reason why. And please tell me I'm not the only one that puts my nose into clean laundry, my kids' hair, my husband's t-shirts and pillow, my babies' mouths to sniff up their buttermilk breath...

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

So this girl is more spice than sugar most days, but sometimes she is just pure sweetness. She picked this bouquet of flowers for me and my favorite part was the dried, decrepit weed that she'd included with all of the other beautiful blooms. I love that she saw just as much beauty in that weed as she did in the flowers. She's a lot like this bouquet; beautiful, colorful, girly at times, but also a healthy dose of rough-and-tumble in the mix. I guess we all have a few noxious weeds in our personality.

Ruff 'n' It

We decided to have a mini camp-out with the kids in our backyard and it was so much fun! It was a far cry from our secluded spot in the woods, camped out next to a stream, but it was still a fun little get-away. We set up the tent early in the day so all 4 of the kids could have fun playing in it. Then once I got the twins settled into bed we officially set up camp. We got into our pj's, drug all of the extra blankies and sleeping bags out, made a fire, roasted marshmallow for s'mores, lit up the lantern, had bedtime snacks, read books and waited for it to get dark...Then we watched for falling stars and just snuggled in.Ella and Dawson were so giggly and goofy. Ella would run over to the lantern and crouch down with this wild look in her eyes, like a cave man seeing fire for the first time, it was hilarious. Our plans for relaxing and star gazing were interrupted constantly, they kept getting in the tent, then crawling back out and onto our bed. Getting in, crawling out... I hate sleeping in tents and would much rather be under the night sky, and our little bed on the grass was cozy. We watched for shooting stars and satellites, and then at about 10 o'clock it became pretty clear that we weren't going to make it the whole night outside. I put batteries in the monitor so I could bring it out and still hear Charlie wake up for his Mommy-and-me time in the middle of the night, but we didn't get that far. And it's probably best since the mosquitoes love me and were eating me alive. We left our little camp-site out on the lawn until...We heard a tHuNdEr storm roll in a couple hours after we went to bed. I absolutely love ThUnDeR and lightening! So Todd ran out to pick up some of the blankets and pillows and I opened up the blinds and the window so I could see and hear the storm from bed, I love the smell of rain in the summer time. I would just start to drift off and see a flash, so I'd try to keep my eyes pried open so I wouldn't miss another lightening strike. We woke up tired, and I had a LOT of laundry to do the next day between the stuff that got soaked outside, and washing every one's sheets after they'd gone to bed all smoky and sticky. But it was worth it, hopefully we can squeeze in one more faux camp-out before we have to kiss summer goodbye.
